Kidney Function

Our kidneys play an important role in the way our bodies function. The two bean-shaped organs are about four to five inches long and about the size of your fist. Located in the back of the lower abdomen on either side of the spine, our kidneys perform a variety of functions. The kidneys’ main function is to serve as a filtering system for our bodies as they filter and clean the blood, regulate fluid levels and remove excess waste from the body in the form of urine. Our kidneys perform additional important tasks in our bodies, including:

  • Regulate and balance chemicals, including potassium, phosphorus and calcium
  • Remove drugs and toxins
  • Release hormones into the blood to regulate blood pressure and make red blood cells
  • Keep bones healthy and strong
